At any rate, do not even bother to watch this. I know that if you are really a fan of HP and you see a "movie" that has "Voldemort" in its name, it's hard not to hit the "Play" button but I think you'd be better off watching any of the shallow TV shows that are currently on TV.
I wonder, what was the original motive behind making this? To label a worthless flick "Voldemort," attract people to movie theaters and get rich because not everyone reads reviews and then, there are also parents with kids First of all, let me make it absolutely clear that Voldemort: Origins of the Heir is by all means a short film.
With that in mind, it really shows how much dedicated fans can accomplish with a 15, euro budget and a runtime of less than an hour - with no motivation other than their love for the series.
The inconsistencies are either too small or too few to matter, though hardcore fans might notice. It is essentially a small backstory made into a film.
As such, it will probably appeal to longtime fans, but at the same time leave them wanting more, due to the film's short length.
The production values are surprisingly good for being a fan film. The special effects are nice and full of eye candy, certain sequences are really well edited, and the portrayal of Tom Riddle stands out.
It is a polished film with some memorable lines here and there. They really could have messed up on this one - and they didn't.
If you are a fan of the Harry Potter series, go give it a watch. It's free due to the non-commercial nature of the film , it doesn't stray too much from the canon, and, after all, it only lasts an hour.
Acting was really cringy to watch, these amateur actors tried too hard to display emotions but all they did was give us this "smelly wet socks" look on their face all the time.
Good acting doesn't mean you have to look like a sour-grape all the time, lessons learned kids.
Good concept and great plot only problems would be voices not matching up and we don't know anything about what happened to the gryffindor's heir.
I watch all kinds of movies to the end before I make my opinion, The concept of this story is actually good it's how it's delivered.
I will not spoil the ending, if you have not seen this, but if the story was less narative and actually reversed from capture to the opening of the story then acted be those individual roles, it would have been a good movie.
Due to time limitations Apparently, the story was rushed. The effort is there and it could have been a great movie. K Rowling in collaboration could do a lot with this.
It took me a while to figure out that not only is this movie dubbed, the original "actors" are actually speaking English? How bad does the acting have to be to decide to dub over it?
Im putting this into a "Fan Film" genre, just to have my rating make sense. Horrible Storyline, which could be done better even with an extremely low budget.
Forget the poor acting and dialogue, I get that it was a budget film. What I don't get is that they say it was made by 'Fans' but I felt as though they had never even read the books.
I understand that fan fiction branches out from the original works however I felt they made major changes that in essence would make the works of JK Rowling not make sense.
Such as the flash back where Merope I assume is cradling a baby Tom Riddle whilst playing with the necklace?
Or the fact that in the original books, there was such heavy emphasis on the fact that Tom Riddle didn't have any friends, only followers, yet hes chilling out in the room of requirement with some kids?
The whole plot revolved around the heirs searching for the heirlooms, well any worthy gryffindor would know that the sword would present itself to them if them were in need!
This is just a few of the major plot holes, I feel as though they completely wasted their time and there is no excuse for a bad plot.
Voldemort was born bad, peeps need to get over it! Even though I thought this film would be way better and more fun I was -sadly- wrong.
It wasnt fun at all. Although it started great with some really nice and to be honest beautiful actions scenes for a film with a budget that was out to prove that passion means more than money they failed to prove that.
The story doesn't offer anything to the whole harry potter universe. The writers tried to make the whole movie something you wouldnt expect so you would stay focused but that didnt work there wasnt anything really unexpected not even the ending was really unexpected the fact that the heir's die is not a secret in this movie they though that it was and we the viewers did not know that.
Another thing this movie failed to do successfully was the acting that was just plain bad. The actors really seems like they tried to do something there but they did not succeed they are not believable most dont feel their character and because of the way they act it might make you just to stop the film and close it because of the awkwardness.
If it wasnt for the anticipation upon this film the good camera and an average editing Well some hours on after effects but lets not get into that I wouldnt watch this film and if anyone would wanna watch they should but if they are not sure then they sure shouldn't.
Personally I am really disappointed from it and especially from the people that made it and the public statements they made.
It was a great effort from dedicated Potterheads! It was an enjoyable experience to watch it. And the twist at the end didn't see that coming.
Tom is as vicious as always. The special effects were pretty good for a fan made film. There were a few inconsistencies and some dubbing issues but I still give the experience 10 stars.
Well Done Team!!! I do not like fan movies. Concerning fan made movies, i would like to relate a personal experience.
If you propose yourself to watch a non professionally made production, the main thing you would have to do is to put yourself in an emotionally compatible state.
You are going to see what amateurs writers, amateurs actors, amateurs cinematographers produced. I find meself thinking "i want a little more" in this cases.
I managed to do so. And, in doing it, enjoyed meself immensely watching some of the most entertaining productions fandom have produced.
I find it fair to mention them here supposing someone will eventually read this. The hunt for Gollum They have a site.
As a great fan of the books, i know the impossibility of making a film that will satisfy me. That said, i loved the Bakshi animation and had to accept, despite my many observations, the Jackson film.
This fan production is far beyond anything i would expect from amateurs, and, of course, reading more about the people that made it, they are, in fact, fans - and professionals.
Born of Hope Beautiful story and acting, directed by a woman and that carries this special feminine sensibility.
Look for the site Star Trek After the unfortunate recent foray to restart a new ST series, if you are a fan, do not despair!
Try in the mindset i sugested Aurora, an animated story that i loved, and the exceptional Star Trek Continues.
I really wonder if anyone read this things. Best regards! Everyone here needs to get over themselves, Lets see you do a better job End rant that all said, and from the blindness and dim wittedness of the majority of tasteless critics on this site aside, I must point out that it would have been nice to have some foreground into our main character and how she managed to trace the diary to soviet Russia.
Other than that I was intelligent enough to piece together the plot, and to follow it. It doesn't take a monkey to follow and frankly if you cant keep up, find another movie to watch.
The effects were fantastic for a film budget of 15k and though the acting lacked some of the finesse of the original harry potter films no one wants to replace the original cast and no one is trying to.
It's not great, but it's a fan film! It's a load of fans with a tiny budget making something that they clearly love. If you go in knowing that and expecting that, you'll enjoy it.
This short film can't be as good as a multimilion production, of course. Dialogues are overal poor and dubing's making everything terrible.
The actor that played Tom was actually quite remarquable. To put it in a nutshell this short film is better than I expected: Creative story, good acting, dark atmosphere - a must see for fans.
It offers a creative way of telling the story of Tom Riddles late years in Hogwarts, his time at Borgin and Burkes and beyond. The story is consistent with the flashbacks of Tom Riddles past gathered by Dumbledore in the books and additionally there are some new, very interesting insights.
The thing I got most impressed with apart from the good story was the dark atmosphere. The settings, the costumes, acting and dialogues - it is all well done.
There were also some special effects that looked very good, which is very impressive with a budget like this.
The acting is flawless, I especially liked the actor of Tom Riddle who was actually way better than the actor in the Chamber of Secrets.
The actress portraying the heir of Gryffindor did a very good job as well. The only negative aspect is that the movie is a bit too short for the big topic.
There were some more things I wanted to see and some relationships could have been portrayed more detailed.
RockoDaFoxxo 21 January I really wanted to like this, or at least find it interesting. I've been a Potterhead ever since I was a child and I always hope for the best whenever any new films, spinoffs, plays, etc.
What was Voldemort's origin story? That's actually a pretty good idea for a side-story, so I hoped the filmmakers' will add some interesting twists to this question even if their work is amateurish.
But nah. It practically told everything we already knew about. Even if you take the Harry Potter brand outside of this film, it's still pretty bad.
A low budget and unknown actors shouldn't be your main source for criticism, sure, but poor execution is always hard to get past by. The story is convoluted and uninteresting, the acting and dubbing is poor, the dialogue is overripe, the characters outside of a few exceptions are two-dimensional.
It's an amateurish production that's also a boring one. The cinematography, special effects, and lighting are actually competent and are almost worth being in your average Hollywood blockbuster.
Some of the ideas are good. I liked the costumes and the very beginning. There was a lot of passion and hard-work behind the camera, and I will give credit there in an age of cynical, lazy cash-grabs.
It really saddens me to leave such a harsh review on a Harry Potter-based story, and maybe I'm too narrow-minded of a viewer to not notice more positives.
But Voldemort: Origins of the Heir just didn't do it to me as a fan and as a viewer. It isn't insanely stupid like that Cursed Child play book, but it's nothing more than a shrug.
I'm tired of talking trash about everything 'cause I feel like a pessimist. RaccoonRocky 24 January I'm a Potterhead myself, one of those who wrote in newsgroups when newsgrups did still exist trying to figure out with other fans what the next book could be in the era of BOOKS, not movies yet.
Said that, I've also seen the movies. All of them. A comparison with this one would be highly unfair, as the "official" movies are professional products.
This one should be, in my humble opinion, seen like a fan story. But despite its short lenght less than an hour and the poorness of the sets all the movie is filmed inside , I saw this Voldemort: Origins of the Heir with pleasure.
I gave 8 to this movie. Yes, actors are dubbed but revoicers are English speakers their names can be read in credits and no one would have liked someone talking English with Italian accent.
So this is a plus, not a con. Yes, there are characters not canonic, but this is for the sake of the plot. Costumes are great. Lights are good.
Directing might not be so great, but good enough. To sum it up, my opinion is highly positive. XweAponX 18 January It is an unofficial fan-made prequel to the Harry Potter film series.
Several original characters are introduced in the film: not only the protagonist, but also the other Hogwarts houses' heirs, and several minor characters for the plot.
The official teaser trailer was released on Facebook and YouTube in June The Facebook video exceeded thirty million views in less than 48 hours.
On December 1, , the final trailer was released on YouTube. The film was not released in cinemas but is available to view for free on YouTube.
It was uploaded for viewing on 13 January and by March had received over 15 million views. Reception to the film has been generally mixed with criticism levelled at the actors specifically their ages and direction, but praise for the special effects.
As a flashback, Tom Riddle is shown packing his bags and preparing to leave his house. As he does so, he pauses over a photograph of himself and three other students before abandoning it.
In the present, Grisha McLaggen is attempting to break into a Soviet Auror warehouse, but despite defeating many of the guards is captured and fed an intravenous drip of Veritaserum while questioned by General Makarov.
In a mixture of flashbacks and present tense a Soviet reconnaissance team finds a chest filled with dark objects, including Tom Riddle's diary, but are killed soon after opening it.
In the warehouse, Grisha explains that she was a student with Riddle at Hogwarts, who along with Wiglaf Sigurdsson and Lazarus Smith were the true heirs of the Hogwarts founders Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff respectively.
The heirs formed a club dedicated to "making the world a better place". When an argument occurred between Lazarus and Tom over Grisha's affections, they fell out.
Grisha noted that Tom was becoming distant to them all and changed completely after the incident. Over the last few years Grisha has become an Auror and dedicated herself to tracking down Tom in the belief she can save him from himself and the dark path.
Under further questioning and flashbacks, it is shown how Tom stole both Hufflepuff's cup and Slytherin's locket from Hepzibah Smith before killing her and framing her house-elf Hokey, and that Grisha believes he intends to create Horcruxes.
She thinks that Tom's diary - the artefact she was trying to retrieve from the warehouse - will give her a clue as to either Tom's whereabouts, or his intent.
She also explains that Tom has since killed both Lazarus and Wiglaf and it is implied that he has already taken and started using the name "Voldemort" rather than Tom Riddle.
After deliberation, Makarov says that he believes her story as she was under the influence of Veritaserum when she told it - yet just because she believes it does not actually mean that it is true, she could be mistaken in her belief.
However, he is not willing to take the chance as the threat of Grindelwald is still a recent memory and so gives her the diary, saying, "it is a Brit problem", and that they should deal with it.
Grisha is released, returned her personal belongings and allowed to leave. As she leaves, Makarov asks her how she knew they had the diary, and Grisha replies, "I didn't - or maybe I did The film finishes with a flashback to a second reconnaissance team finding the chest and recovering it.
The two Soviets discuss the contents, mentioning that the bones are female the implication being that they are Grisha's and what they mean, with one grimly concluding that there must be darkness in order for there to be light.
